2020 at Crema Joe - the year that was!

What a year it has been at Crema Joe. Like many small Melbourne businesses, it has been a challenging time on many levels - full of highs and lows. Somehow, amongst the disruption to 'business as usual' we are grateful to have also achieved so much, and with your help and support, we feel proud and blessed to continue to be part of the difference. Here's our 2020 wrap up!

Our aim is to encourage and motivate consumers to make better choices when it comes to their coffee habits. And this year in particular, with so many Aussies making the move to working from home, Crema Joe has continued to help more people to make better, planet friendly choices.

In addition to this, after many, many months of preparation (and despite the challenges of Melbourne lockdowns) our Precious Plastic Melbourne initiative finally joined the Crema Joe family at HQ, where we are now producing products using 100% recycled plastic.

Early on in the year, we dove headfirst into our capsule reuse program for businesses! Unfortunately, we were forced to shut down this very important project due to the Melbourne Covid lockdowns. However, the feedback from our corporate clients was so amazing and kind, (albeit short-lived) and we certainly feel that the program was a success during its time!

When it comes to running a sustainable business, we're continually working on improving our own practices, moving forward with passion and purpose. We've continued to take careful, intentional steps this year, treading more lightly on our earth wherever possible. We've also helped other businesses and the community to become more environmentally responsible - working collectively is one of the best ways we can continue to build our impact.

And by packaging our orders using repurposed, reused or recyclable materials, not only do we increase the lifecycle of these materials, reducing landfill, but we're also helping our local community to reduce waste. So we continued to run our Recycling Program around lockdowns, implementing contactless drop-off for our local community.

And of course, we continued to help consumers reduce their impact via our reusable pods.

Some new faces joined our team in our plastic recycling space. Shaye, our lovely warehouse superstar, also welcomed a Crema Joe baby early in the year!

Random acts of kindness

With our fellow Victorians in mind in particular, over the course of 2020 we wanted to spread a little positivity.

To say thank you to our healthcare heroes, in August our team took some time out to put together care package goodies for The Royal Melbourne Hospital.

We wanted to let our local customers know that we're thinking of them during COVID-19 and Stage 4 restrictions, so throughout the year we sprinkled some surprise extras amongst our orders!

Awards and accolades

In February, we were recognised as a finalist in the Australian Small Business Champions Awards in the Environmental Business category.

In July, Crema Joe landed a spot on The World's Most Rubbish Directory.

In October, we made the Inside Small Business Top 50 Leaders report, and our founder Kayla took part on the awards panel via livestream from lockdown in Melbourne.

And in November, our founder Kayla placed as a finalist for the Sustainability award, and took out the pink trophy (3rd) in the people's choice Making A Difference - Eco category at the 2020 AusMumpreneur awards.

As we reflect back on the year, we are so grateful to be able to slow down and spend the holidays with our loved ones this Christmas, knowing that not everyone has that luxury. Thank you to the entire Crema Joe community, for your support over the past year, and the years before it - each and every one of you are an integral part to why we do what we do, and our overall impact! Be kind to yourself this Christmas, and we look forward to continuing our journey towards a greener future in 2021.
