Maintaining a clean Nespresso machine

It may have been a long time since you’ve even thought about cleaning your coffee capsule machine. It feels like a lot of effort, and a lot of people assume it doesn't make too much of a difference. In fact, a dirty machine adds impurities to your coffee, leaving an off-putting flavour as a result of the build-up of oils. Cleaning your coffee machine not only extends it's life, but also ensures the quality of the coffee you brew.
Mould & bacteria in your Nespresso machine: How to deep clean your pod/capsule appliance

Why is cleaning my coffee pod / capsule machine so important?

For delicious coffee and longevity of the machine, it’s super important to keep your beloved machine clean! A clean coffee machine brews consistently better tasting coffee; the difference in flavour between a clean and dirty machine is mind-blowing. Regular cleaning and descaling also extends the life of your capsule machine by preventing mineral and limescale build up, which can result in break down or poor function.

Dirty Nespresso machine? Here's how to clean it properly

How will I know when it is time to descale and clean my machine?

Coffee machines build up deposits of calcium and lime over time. “Descaling” is the act of stripping these deposits from your machine’s surfaces. You should remove these buildups by descaling regularly to keep your machine functioning properly. A good descale will also address excess water in your drip tray, allowing for optimum pump pressure, and therefore quality coffee and crema. Keep in mind that pump bar pressure does vary from machine to machine.

If you use your machine often and want to ensure that it is always producing the best flavour, once every three months it should be descaled, and the brewing chamber should be given a thorough clean monthly. Milk lines / dairy systems should be cleaned daily to avoid the formation of bacteria from spoiled milk.

What should I look for in a cleaner?

Firstly, don't use vinegar! Vinegar doesn't remove coffee oils the way a professionally formulated coffee machine cleaner does. Do: Look for good cleaning solutions that will remove oils, stains and break down grime. We also suggest using something that is eco-friendly and doesn't contain any potentially nasty chemicals. If you want to go eco, our product of choice for descaling is CaffeNu Eco Descaler. CaffeNu safely and effectively descales your machine, and is phosphate free. For a convenient way to remove residue and mould from your brewing chamber, we suggest a cleaner with a foaming agent such as CaffeNu Eco Formula Cleaning Capsules, which are great value for money, and work in just 2 minutes.

It's as easy as that! Now you can get back to enjoying great tasting coffee!
